About Daily Intake Guide Labelling

Daily Intake Guide labelling is a simple way of showing the amount of nutrients a food contributes to a person’s diet. It shows the percentage of daily requirements for energy and other nutrients (eg. carbohydrate, protein, fat, salt, fibre) contained in one serving of the food.

Daily Intake Guide values are based on the dietary requirements of an average adult. The Food Standards Code states that an average adult requires approximately 8700kJ per day. This figure is calculated be averaging the energy needs of a physically active man and woman of average height and age and of a healthy weight within the Australian population.

It is important to note that an individual’s dietary requirements may vary based on factors such as gender, age and level of physical activity.
